Impact of Dubai Fitness Challenge on UAE Residents:
Recent data from Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) for the 2021 edition of the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) illustrates the positive impact it has had on societal well-being over the past five years. This burgeoning reputation received validation from a study conducted by United Kingdom (UK)-based Lenstore, which recognized Dubai as one of the world’s top cities in its Healthy Lifestyle Cities Report 2022. The report evaluated 48 cities based on ten metrics, including outdoor activities and the cost of a monthly gym membership, both areas of significant focus for the DFC. In the 2021 edition, there was an increase in the number of individuals achieving their 30×30 target, with 88 per cent of participants committing to at least 30 minutes of daily exercise for 30 days, up from 85 per cent in 2020. Many participants exceeded these goals, with 36 per cent dedicating more than 60 minutes and 12 per cent spending over 90 minutes on daily exercise.
Female participation remained robust in the Challenge’s fifth edition, with women comprising 41 per cent of overall participants. While the DFC attracted participants of all age groups, the report revealed that participation peaked among those aged 18 to 39. Research among participants demonstrated the significant positive impact of physical activity on mental well-being, with 28 per cent reporting improved self-esteem and 25 per cent stating that DFC participation enhanced their mental health. The Challenge also helped reduce anxiety (24 per cent) and encouraged higher levels of relaxation (22 per cent). The emergence of more free outdoor spaces for workouts, extensive running and cycling tracks spanning hundreds of kilometers, and the introduction of numerous sporting events have enriched the fitness community. The presence of Fitness Villages and fitness events at DFC has further enhanced the fitness culture in Dubai.
Commenting on the report, Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), said, “The vision of His Highness has always been to make Dubai one of the most active cities in the world and instil healthy habits in our community. Today, we are proud to share that the number of DFC participants in 2021 represented almost half of Dubai’s population – an increase of 110 per cent since the Challenge began five years ago. This incredible achievement demonstrates the community’s commitment to a more active lifestyle, with almost nine out of 10 participants achieving their 30×30 goals and reaping the benefits of the Challenge for both their physical and mental well-being.
The 5th edition of the Challenge saw an overwhelmingly positive response from participants, with 93 per cent expressing extreme satisfaction, a significant increase from the 78 per cent in 2020. Among the aspects that resonated most with participants were the diversity of activities (88 per cent) and access to event information (88 per cent). Additionally, the vibrant atmosphere (87 per cent) and easy access to fitness activities and classes (82 per cent) played pivotal roles in enhancing their overall satisfaction in the 2021 Challenge.
The initiative received substantial support from various partners in both the government and private sectors, contributing to the strong sense of community spirit. Numerous gyms, community parks, and temporary fitness “villages” offered complimentary or subsidized sessions, aligning with the straightforward premise of the DFC: Dedicate 30 minutes daily to exercise, regardless of the type, for 30 days. According to experts, regular half-hour fitness sessions can be a key to long-term physical and mental well-being. Research indicates that dedicating just 30 minutes a day to exercise positively impacts cardiovascular and muscle strength, as well as overall longevity. Furthermore, this daily routine programs the brain to anticipate a daily serotonin boost, which can become addictive and lead to increased metabolism and weight loss.
Dean Henry, a functional medicine coach and founder of UAE Peptides, explains that feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine contribute to a sense of calm and can combat feelings of depression. As a result, a daily 30-minute exercise routine offers not only physical but also cognitive benefits. It is also a manageable commitment compared to longer workout sessions. Henry emphasizes that this time frame allows for a diverse exercise routine, which can vary daily, including activities such as stretching, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), weight training, cardio, and more, and preventing workout boredom. The DFC serves as an excellent starting point for beginners and those looking to re-establish their exercise routine. Nora Hameidani, founder and creative director at Barre Effect studio in Dubai, suggests that beginners should gradually ease into their DFC initiation week while focusing on consistency.

Setting realistic goals, whether it’s gaining strength, losing weight, or improving overall wellness, is essential. Exercising with a friend or family member can make workouts enjoyable and provide motivation and accountability. Hameidani also emphasizes the importance of nutritious foods, proper hydration, and adequate rest to support the new exercise routine. She advises individuals to remember that their fitness journey is unique and not to compare themselves to others, celebrating both small and significant achievements along the way. Hameidani encourages individuals to remember their “why” and stay committed, noting that even 30 minutes of exercise is better than doing nothing.
Lasting Changes
Following the 2021 edition, a post-DFC survey revealed that participants experienced significant psychological benefits. These included boosted positive self-esteem (reported by 28 per cent of respondents) and strengthened mental well-being (reported by 25 per cent), demonstrating the initiative’s positive impact on social well-being. Dr. Ramadan Al Blooshi, the Acting Director of the Public Health Protection Department at the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), noted that the event has played a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of physical activity in enhancing health and reducing lifestyle-related diseases. He remarked, “The initiative has motivated individuals to embrace straightforward yet effective lifestyle habits. This not only enhances the community’s well-being but also directly contributes to reducing the burden of lifestyle diseases on the healthcare system.” Moreover, the initiative has contributed to the expansion of sporting infrastructure within the emirate, offering free fitness and lifestyle facilities. Additional cycling and walking tracks are in the works, providing the public with accessible running and cycling paths and exercise equipment at parks and beaches. This burgeoning fitness consciousness in the Dubai community is also reflected in the increasing trade of sports merchandise in the Emirates.
